BBH’s Women’s History Month celebration finished on a literal and figurative high note, concluding with a keynote event, “Take Flight: You Have the Power to Set Your Own Course.” Living up to her moniker, Vernice Armour (aka “Flygirl”) was the first African-American combat pilot in the US Marine Corp and today is a self-proclaimed “Chief Breakthrough Officer,” as well as a motivational speaker and executive coach.

Vernice discussed the importance of listening to your gut, seizing opportunity, never giving up, and “blooming where you’re planted.” With the perfect balance of humor, passion, compassion and no-nonsense advice, Vernice regaled a captivated audience with stories of her time in the military, breaking through barriers, being a pioneer for women and how she navigated the many obstacles that presented themselves every step of the way.

Her advice was thought-provoking, honest, and practical.

• Acknowledge obstacles, but don’t give them power. We all confront challenges, it’s your mindset that will determine whether you grow from them.
• Give yourself permission to engage. Opportunities will always present themselves – seize them or someone else will.
• “Bloom” where you’re planted. Even if you’re not where you thought you wanted to be, embrace your circumstances and make the most of where you land.
• Relationships are rocket ships. Take the time needed to build strong relationships as ultimately it will give you exposure to solutions and support.
• Be gutsy! Always listen to your inner voice – often the answer you seek is within you.
